The old name Kasai could have meant a place of crows (ka = crow, sai=jungle converted to arable land), or a fig (sai) where a crow perched. Another name of the town was Pakasai. It was said that paka means a sword of which the word krabi is a synonym, but another opinion put the name to being a corruption of Pak Kasai for a town that sat on the mouth (pak) of Kasai canal. The province of Krabi was founded in 1872. Even the origin of the name is arguable, Krabi mean swords. The name might be taken from the fact that ancient swords were found in the area.
Krabi can also mean monkeys. This is another interpretation from the historical site of a town named Banthai Samo, which was one of the twelve zodiacal tributaries of Nakhon Si Thammarat. The symbol of the town was a monkey, a zodiac animal.
